You spend all four nights based at Punda Maria, deep in Kruger's northern third, with three full guided days exploring a stretch of the park known for baobab groves, big elephant and buffalo herds, and some of the best birding in Kruger — including a real shot at the elusive Pel's Fishing Owl.

Your Five Days
What each day of the safari actually looks like, from the drive north to the drive home.
Most guests fly into Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit) or Phalaborwa Airport — an early flight or a shuttle from OR Tambo both work, and flying in is genuinely worth it given how far north Punda Maria sits. Your vehicle is ready between 12:00 and 13:00 at Phalaborwa Gate, and from there it's roughly a four-hour drive to camp, entirely inside Kruger, with a stop for lunch en route (own cost). You'll arrive at Punda Maria in the late afternoon and check into your tented camp, set on a slight rise with a proper view over the bushveld below.
Your first full day stays close to camp, exploring Mahonie Loop and Shongoni waterhole while your guide reads every track, sound and smell the bush offers up. You're back at camp for a late breakfast around 11:00, then it's siesta or pool time through the midday heat — the animals do the same. The afternoon drive picks back up as things cool down, and you'll return to camp right at gate closing.
An early departure toward Pafuri, stopping first at Klopperfontein waterhole in the hope of catching herds drinking and wallowing before the heat sets in. From there it's Nyala Loop, tracing the Luvuvhu River through some of Kruger's best birding country and past baobabs that grow roughly half again as tall here as anywhere else in South Africa. Breakfast is cooked on a gas skottel at the Pafuri picnic spot — you'll help set the table, and possibly stand guard against the local monkeys, while keeping an eye out for the elusive Pel's Fishing Owl. The route continues to Crooks Corner, where the Luvuvhu meets the Limpopo River at a spot with a genuinely unusual history, before heading back to camp for an afternoon at the pool or the bird hide, which regularly draws large elephant herds.
Another early start — Kruger is a big park, and this trip gives you the time to actually watch wildlife rather than just find it. Breakfast is either another bush-style stop at Babalala picnic spot or back at Punda Maria's restaurant, your guide's call on the day. The morning includes a stop at Dzundzwini Spring and its lookout point, which gives a real sense of just how vast the park is from up here. You're back at camp by around 11:00 for pool time or the bird hide, then out again for the afternoon drive, watching for the nocturnal species starting to stir as the light drops.
A relatively early departure back toward Phalaborwa, with the drive south giving one last stretch of game viewing before you connect with your flight or shuttle home. Five days is enough for the far north's quieter, wilder feel to genuinely stay with you.

Transfers and flights to Phalaborwa Gate or Phalaborwa Airport aren't included in this rate. Most guests book an early flight into Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit) or Phalaborwa Airport, or arrange a shuttle from OR Tambo, since flying in leaves you fresher for the drive north on Day 1. Five days with early starts each morning is a lot for younger children specifically, so it's worth telling us ages when you enquire — we'll give you an honest read on whether it fits, or whether the 3-day safari suits your family better.
Neutral colours (avoid bright reds, pinks, yellows and oranges), comfortable walking shoes, a hat, a warm layer for chilly mornings and evenings, and a rain jacket. Bring binoculars and a camera, plus sunscreen and insect repellent — both are also available at the rest camp shop. Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages can be bought at the camp too.
