It surprises a lot of first-time Sabi Sand guests: unlike an all-inclusive resort transfer, the road journey from the airport to your lodge is typically arranged — and paid for — separately from your accommodation. Some lodges will help coordinate it for you, but the vehicle itself is still a standalone booking, either through the lodge, a transfer operator, or us.
The reason it's handled this way rather than bundled into your rate: Sabi Sand isn't one address. It's a large private reserve made up of dozens of independently run lodges, entered through three separate gates depending on where inside the reserve your specific lodge sits — so there's no single "airport shuttle" that could serve everyone the same way.

Between them, these two gates serve the majority of Sabi Sand's lodges and are what most guests flying via Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) or Skukuza Airport will use.
Serves lodges in Sabi Sand's northern sector, more often reached via Hoedspruit's Eastgate Airport than KMIA. A few lodge names don't make it obvious which side of the reserve they're actually on — worth confirming rather than assuming.
KMIA to Sabi Sand's Southern Gates, by Road
For lodges near the southern gates, a private transfer runs from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport through White River, then on to Hazyview, before turning off toward Shaws or Newington Gate rather than continuing into Kruger itself.

Both routes reach the same southern gates. Which one makes sense depends on how your international flight actually routes, not on which sounds more direct.
Fly to Skukuza Airport

Some Sabi Sand lodges can also be reached via charter aircraft or lodge-linked flights into private airstrips within the reserve. These are most commonly used by guests staying at ultra-luxury lodges or as part of longer fly-in safari itineraries. If you're arriving on a scheduled flight into KMIA, Skukuza, or Hoedspruit, a road transfer remains the most common option. Charter flights also typically limit you to a single 20kg checked bag per person — a private road transfer doesn't have that restriction, and it usually costs less besides.
Self-Drive, and Staying in the Northern Sector
You can self-drive in, but it's worth knowing what that actually involves first. With a confirmed lodge booking, you're allowed to drive yourself in through any of the three gates and pay the entrance fee on arrival. In practice, though, Sabi Sand's traversing roads aren't signposted the way Kruger's public roads are, gate names and lodge names don't always line up in any obvious way, and finding your specific lodge's own access track after a long flight — sometimes after dark — is harder than most people expect on a first visit. Once you factor in the rental car, insurance, and fuel, it's rarely the saving it looks like on paper, which is why most guests who look into it end up asking us to arrange it instead.
If your lodge sits in the northern sector, near Gowrie Gate, Hoedspruit's Eastgate Airport is usually the more practical gateway than KMIA, with around an hour's drive from there to the gate itself. Tell us if your lodge is in the north and we'll route the transfer through Hoedspruit instead.
