Book Your Sabi Sand Airport Transfer

Most Sabi Sand lodges don't include the airport transfer in your rate — it's arranged, and paid for, separately. Which gate and route you need also depends on your specific lodge. Send us your lodge and flight and we'll arrange the right driver, at the same rates as booking direct.

Already booked your lodge? This takes under a minute — no obligation to book the transfer with us.

Why You're Seeing This Page

Even at five-star lodges, the transfer usually isn't included

It surprises a lot of first-time Sabi Sand guests: unlike an all-inclusive resort transfer, the road journey from the airport to your lodge is typically arranged — and paid for — separately from your accommodation. Some lodges will help coordinate it for you, but the vehicle itself is still a standalone booking, either through the lodge, a transfer operator, or us.

The reason it's handled this way rather than bundled into your rate: Sabi Sand isn't one address. It's a large private reserve made up of dozens of independently run lodges, entered through three separate gates depending on where inside the reserve your specific lodge sits — so there's no single "airport shuttle" that could serve everyone the same way.

Not sure which gate your lodge uses? That's exactly what we sort out for you — tell us the lodge name and we'll confirm the route rather than have you guess.

Who Drives You

On Safari Africa handles the driving

We arrange Sabi Sand transfers through On Safari Africa, an operator that specialises specifically in transfers into the reserve. They run premium vehicles and have many years' experience on these exact roads and gates — this isn't a general taxi or courier service adapted for game lodges, it's what they do every week, for guests headed to the same lodges you are.

Planning the Route

For guests who want the detail before they book — gates, airport options, and self-drive honestly weighed up.

The Three Gates
Southern & Western Gates · Shaws & Newington

Between them, these two gates serve the majority of Sabi Sand's lodges and are what most guests flying via Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) or Skukuza Airport will use.

Northern Gate · Gowrie

Serves lodges in Sabi Sand's northern sector, more often reached via Hoedspruit's Eastgate Airport than KMIA. A few lodge names don't make it obvious which side of the reserve they're actually on — worth confirming rather than assuming.

The Road Route

KMIA to Sabi Sand's Southern Gates, by Road

For lodges near the southern gates, a private transfer runs from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport through White River, then on to Hazyview, before turning off toward Shaws or Newington Gate rather than continuing into Kruger itself.

Roughly 1h15m – 1h45m of road time, depending on the lodge

Kruger Mpumalanga Int'l Airport, arrivals

First leg north
Hazyview
Toward the R536
Shaws / Newington Gate
Sabi Sand entry, cash entrance fee applies
Your Lodge
Within the gate's traversing area

On timing: an entrance fee is payable per vehicle and per person at the gate, in cash, so confirm the current amount with your operator rather than assuming it's bundled into your lodge rate. Each lodge also sits inside a specific traversing area rather than at the gate itself, so a driver who knows the exact property, not just "Sabi Sand" as a destination, matters more here than for a single-address transfer.

Honest Comparison

Fly to Skukuza, or Transfer by Road From KMIA?

Both routes reach the same southern gates. Which one makes sense depends on how your international flight actually routes, not on which sounds more direct.

Fly to Skukuza Airport

Short road hop from the airstrip
  • Shortest possible transfer — roughly 25 minutes to Shaws or Newington Gate
  • Straightforward if your routing already goes via Johannesburg
  • Only useful for southern and western lodges — doesn't help guests staying near Gowrie Gate
  • Fewer scheduled seats than KMIA, which can push fares higher in peak season

Road Transfer From KMIA

Private vehicle, arranged separately
  • Usually the cheaper, easier-to-book flight in, with more airlines and frequencies
  • Flexible departure time, easy to combine with another Lowveld stop before or after
  • The transfer isn't complimentary from most lodges — arranged and paid separately, which is where we come in
  • Roughly 1h15m–1h45m of driving before you reach the gate itself

Not sure which of these fits your actual flights? Send us both options and we'll tell you honestly which is faster and easier for your dates.

Ask Us

What about private charter flights?

Some Sabi Sand lodges can also be reached via charter aircraft or lodge-linked flights into private airstrips within the reserve. These are most commonly used by guests staying at ultra-luxury lodges or as part of longer fly-in safari itineraries. If you're arriving on a scheduled flight into KMIA, Skukuza, or Hoedspruit, a road transfer remains the most common option. Charter flights also typically limit you to a single 20kg checked bag per person — a private road transfer doesn't have that restriction, and it usually costs less besides.

Other Ways In

Self-Drive, and Staying in the Northern Sector

You can self-drive in, but it's worth knowing what that actually involves first. With a confirmed lodge booking, you're allowed to drive yourself in through any of the three gates and pay the entrance fee on arrival. In practice, though, Sabi Sand's traversing roads aren't signposted the way Kruger's public roads are, gate names and lodge names don't always line up in any obvious way, and finding your specific lodge's own access track after a long flight — sometimes after dark — is harder than most people expect on a first visit. Once you factor in the rental car, insurance, and fuel, it's rarely the saving it looks like on paper, which is why most guests who look into it end up asking us to arrange it instead.

If your lodge sits in the northern sector, near Gowrie Gate, Hoedspruit's Eastgate Airport is usually the more practical gateway than KMIA, with around an hour's drive from there to the gate itself. Tell us if your lodge is in the north and we'll route the transfer through Hoedspruit instead.

What You're Booking

A Private Transfer, Matched to Your Exact Lodge

Because Sabi Sand is a collection of separately run lodges rather than one address, the transfer itself needs to be booked against the specific property, not just "Sabi Sand" as a destination. That means a private vehicle sized to your group and luggage, a driver who knows which gate and traversing area your lodge sits in, and a departure time built around your actual flight rather than a fixed shuttle schedule.

Sabi Sand's better-known lodges book out well ahead of peak travel dates, so it's worth locking in the transfer as soon as your stay is confirmed rather than leaving logistics until the week of arrival.

Leopard resting on a low branch in Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve

Sabi Sand's reputation for leopard sightings comes from decades of daily, off-road tracking by lodge guides. Nothing is ever guaranteed, and how often you see one still depends on the specific lodge and traversing area you're staying in.

Lodges We Arrange Transfers To

Sabi Sand Lodges

Operators quote transfers per lodge, not per reserve, so naming the property matters more here than for a single-gate destination. Lodges guests most often ask about include:

Booked somewhere not listed? We arrange transfers to every Sabi Sand lodge, not just the ones above.

Questions

Sabi Sand Transfer — FAQ

No. Sabi Sand is entered through three separate gates — Shaws Gate, Newington Gate and Gowrie Gate — each serving a different set of lodges. Shaws and Newington sit in the south and west and cover most lodges; Gowrie sits in the north and covers the reserve's northern sector.

For lodges near Shaws or Newington Gate, road transfers typically run around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes via White River and Hazyview. Exact time depends on the specific lodge and its traversing area.

Yes, for lodges near the southern gates. Skukuza Airport is roughly a 25-minute road transfer from Shaws or Newington Gate, making it the fastest option if your international routing already goes via Johannesburg. It doesn't help guests staying near Gowrie Gate in the north.

Northern-sector lodges use Gowrie Gate, usually reached via Hoedspruit's Eastgate Airport rather than Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. It's about an hour's drive from Hoedspruit to the gate.

Yes, with a confirmed lodge booking you can self-drive in through any of the three gates and pay the entrance fee on arrival. Traversing roads inside the reserve aren't signposted the way Kruger's public roads are, which is why many first-time guests still choose an arranged transfer.

Yes, a fee is payable per vehicle and per person at the gate, in cash. Confirm the current amount with your operator or lodge before travelling, since it isn't necessarily bundled into your accommodation rate.

Usually not. Most Sabi Sand lodges treat the airport transfer as a separate, bookable add-on rather than something included in your nightly rate — regardless of how premium the lodge is. It's worth confirming directly with your lodge, and if they don't include it, that's exactly what we arrange.
